Life resembles a narrative, rich with experiences that shape our understanding, perceptions, and future decisions. Each unexpected twist, lesson learned, and connection made contributes to our personal growth and insight into the world around us.
Recently, I encountered a family friend, Cindy, just before the Christmas holidays. During our brief conversation, she shared her plan to take her mother to a spa for the holiday. “Mom has never been to a spa, and if she enjoys it, we’ll become regulars,” she said, hoping to create lasting memories together. Given my passion for spas, I anticipated her seeking advice or recommendations. However, that didn’t happen.
A few days after Christmas, we had lunch at my home, and I eagerly asked about their spa experience. “It was fine,” Cindy replied. But before she could elaborate, her mother interjected, visibly upset: “Fine? I barely survived the boredom! I thought my brain would fry in the sauna. We were exhausted the entire day!”
As a devoted advocate for sauna bathing, I was surprised, though not entirely shocked. Over the years, I’ve encountered numerous similar experiences during my spa research. Curious, I probed further. Initially hesitant, they gradually shared their thoughts. They praised the spa's beautiful setting, friendly staff, and great prices, even mentioning a discount. Yet, despite these positives, they described their experience as a disaster, to the point of considering a negative review. Why?
Through our conversation, a surprising realization emerged: they simply didn’t know how to navigate the spa. Even more perplexing, they hadn’t recognized their lack of knowledge. We laughed at the irony that Cindy hadn’t sought my advice because she assumed that using the various pools and facilities would be self-explanatory. Unfortunately, no staff member was available to guide them, and they felt embarrassed to ask for help. Relying on instinct, they observed others, yet their only reference was the hourglass in the sauna. They concluded that a comprehensive guidebook would have been invaluable.
Their experience isn’t unique. Many newcomers encounter similar challenges on their first spa visit. I can relate; my own initial spa experience was lacklustre, akin to a disappointing first love—great expectations met with mundane reality. I left wondering about the true value of spas.
It would be interesting to explore how many first-time visitors have similar experiences and how many never return, missing out on the long-term health benefits spas offer. This not only affects clients but also impacts service providers, leading to lost opportunities for both.
However, my story doesn’t end there. A few days later, I visited the same hotel spa to see if Cindy’s experience was an isolated incident. The spa was indeed impressive—well-designed, clean, and equipped with all the amenities a connoisseur would expect. Yet, wanting to experience it as a beginner, I approached the staff for a tour and guidance on sauna use.
Initially surprised, the staff informed me that the spa manager would be my guide, but she was currently occupied. After a 20-minute wait, the manager finally arrived, apologized for the delay, and invited me on a tour. When we reached the sauna, I asked for instructions on proper usage. To my astonishment, she stated that neither she nor her staff used the sauna and couldn’t assist me.
After the tour, I introduced myself and proposed organizing a workshop on the benefits and correct usage of the sauna. Her response was disheartening; she insisted they didn’t need such a workshop, claiming they already knew enough about sauna protocols. She excused herself, noting her next client was waiting.
Reflecting on this experience, it became clear that such stories shouldn’t occur. It’s not that the manager dismissed my offer; it’s that they potentially lost future customers because no one provided basic guidance on spa protocols.
I hope sharing this experience helps prevent similar situations for others. To prevent it, I will gladly assist if you want to enhance your staff's understanding of sauna use.
